Maximum Rock N Roll #321

SUNDOWNERS - GNOME & GLACIER LP
Hard to pin down. SUNDOWNERS has a similar vibe to KILLER DREAMER. They aren't really as spastic or fast, but the weird sort of hectic guitar parts really remind me of that band. I like the lo-fi sound quality here, too. I appreciate when bands don't go all-out with fancy recordings. III know it's not always true, but it makes me feel like they care more about the experience than the actual material product. SUNDOWNERS might be the first non-hardcore band from Minneapolis in a while that iillicits zero comparisons to that one really popular band that everyone seems to mention in these reviews. You know the one. (BD)

The band asked me to do this LP awhile back and couldn't due to too much on the Recess plate. Chris/Dirtcult came to the rescue like the smart motherfucker he is. Once i opened the package of these LP's my initial reaction was "WHY?!!?!". I mean, i knew the music was great but the cover!! totally perfect! Another prize from the Dirt Cult! Support that label...and this band!--(todd congelliere

I'm having trouble describing this one. Punk rock that refuses to be pigeonholed. These Minnapolis Kids take elements of all my favorite records and make them their own. Incredible! Amazing Midwestern punk rock that sounds like it could have come out of San Pedro(Chris Mason)

The best, most interesting local punk record in a really long time.(Ali Jaafar)

VERY GOOD LP! I was very unsure of this record based off the fact a band I never even seen a record of prior to this has an LP out and then with such ridiculous artwork but you know what? Records like this that throw you for a loop and just flatline you are the reasons I still stick with this music. These Minnesota youth are not entirely cut from the same cloth as Rivethead or some band with the initials D4, BUT do take some influence from them and countless other ends of punk and music as a whole. As Chris who does the label that put this out said, ''you can't peghole it'' and thats what is so good about the record. You can't. One of the 5 best pop punk LP's I heard this year, and more pop punk kicked my ass than hardcore. (-Kiddo & NickSick of Cowabunga! Records)

Surprisingly, this is the first time this band found its way onto my turntable. That’s too bad, ‘cause this is right up my alley. Scrappy, DIY pop punk that’s obviously unorthodox, but in ways that aren’t instantly obvious. Oddball, but still very familiar. Like Tulsa with a little more meat on the bones, or Off With Their Heads with less of a bone to pick. Sundowners put the spring in ........Springfield and will fulfill your need for a solid, well-rounded album. On 45 and the grooves go all the way in! –Daryl Gussin (Dirt Cult)

SUNDOWNERS: Gnome and Glacier: LP
[Looking at the cover, and then pondering.] I’ve never given much thought to the type of music that a bunch of garden gnomes would make if they had the opportunity. Would it be Smurfy? Small and bearded music? I bet there’d be some polka. They’re probably shit-tired of Christmas music, looking at rosemary bushes, and being crawled over by snails. I put the Sundowners in the same sect as North Trolls, Audacity, and Thee Makeout Party. The larger chunks of their music making can be traced to top-tier DIY punk like Shark Pants, The Bananas, and Shang-A-Lang, but they’re smart enough to not put tracing paper on light tables of their mentors’ songs. I suspect it’s a mixture of youth, drugs, infrequent bathing, and enjoying the moment that gives ‘em their own signatures and style. Good stuff, akin in the chose-your-own-adventure spirit of the Abi Yoyos. Warms up on repeat listens. –Todd (Dirt Cult)
